Poker is a game of incomplete information. Even the best poker players will disagree on the best strategy in every situation. But there are steps that every player can take to help ensure they have the best chance to become a consistently profitable online poker player. I've included 10 suggestions that have helped many players.
- As online poker is a game played on a computer, it is wise to use every possible legal software program that might assist you. Purchase and utilize poker softer (Poker Tracker 3 or Holdem Manager) to accurately record your results and statistics. Learn to use a heads up display and be diligent about reviewing sessions to assess your strengths and weaknesses.
- Join a reputable poker training site (e.g. CardRunners, DeucesCracked, Leggo, Bluefire, PokerXFactor etc.). Who better to learn from than established winning players who walk you through their thinking process.
- Be pro-active in your learning. Don't just watch videos, interact with others looking to improve, posing questions, studying HH's, set up sweat sessions with good players.
- Set strict bankroll guidelines so as never to jeopardize your online bankroll and manage your levels of play. Playing at levels you can afford to play give you peace of mind allowing you to play comfortably, as scared money is rarely winning money.
- Set a strict stop loss to prevent 'going off' for a big number. If you stop playing after losing a pre-arranged number of buy'ins whether due to bad play or bad luck, you can never tilt off your bankroll.
- Learn to play more than one table at a time. Even if it's only two or four tables at once, it can dramatically increase your win rate. Learn to find your balance of optimal focus and increased win rate. Sometimes playing more tables can actually decrease your win rate and focus.
- Determine which games suit your temperament, time availability, and playing style (SNG, MTT, or Cash Games). While some players switch from one format to another, it is usually best to specialize in the one that best suits your temperament and tendencies.
- Playing optimally requires your focus, don't surf the web, check email, and IM your buddies while playing and expect to play ideally. If you do, play fewer tables or step down a level so that your decreased focus won't cost you in important decisions.
- Make sure to be hydrated and energized while playing. Music often is helpful to prolong the focus and enjoyment, although for some it can be distracting. If you play tired, hungry, or annoyed, you are unlikely to play your best.
- Keep a proper perspective. The best players in the world win 52-60% of the time, with 3-5 BB/100 long term win rates. Don't expect too much from your sessions. Minimize your losses and maximize your wins. The goal is to profit long term, not to beat any particular player or game.
