» How should I manage my bankroll optimally?
Optimal bankroll manaement is based on a number of factors:
- What type of poker you play (SNGs, 6-max, full ring, tournaments, etc.)
- Your style of play
- Your ability level
- Willingness to redeposit
A breakdown for a minimum bankroll by game type follows. These suggestions are based on the assumption you are an average low limit grinder, SNG or tourney player. By the time your skills improve, you will know more about your game and what sort of bankroll you need in relation to your limits or buy-ins:
No Limit Ring Games: An absolute minimum of 15-20 buy-ins, although most people, especially the inexperienced, are more comfortable with at least 25-30.
- Limit Ring Games: 200 big bets (defined as twice the big blind) is the least you should have to play limit games. We recommend carrying something more akin to 300 big bets until you become a competent player.
- Sit 'N Go's: You need to have a minimum of 20 entries. Even twenty is dangerous territory for beginners. Having more than 30 buy-ins would be advisable.
- Tournaments: 50 entries should be a good starting point. If you find yourself to be a losing player or if you hit the skids, keeping 75 entries online may be a better idea.
There are hundreds of theories about how to manage your roll as you move up through the limits. With any game type you need to be flexible and humble enough to move back down if you run into a cold streak. For example, many cash players will not move up until they have 40 buys for the next limit. If they drop down to 35 at any point, they will go back down and build up to 40 before taking another shot. Until you get some experience and become a solid winning player, PokerCurious advises you should always err on the side of caution.
Remember, nobody has ever gone broke by being nitty with their bankroll!
